Mom Loves Wall-E

I talked to my mom on the phone a few hours ago.

She loves me. She misses me. Will I come visit soon? Do I love her? She finished the coloring book I gave her, can she have a new one? She loves her Wall-E doll, do I like Wall-E? She loves Wall-E. Do I love Wall-E? Do I love her?

So I will probably go out tomorrow and see if Fred Meyer or Wal-Mart has any of the Wall-E stickerbooks or coloring books, and mail a couple to her.

It's strange, buying childrens coloring books and sticker books for a 60 year old woman.

But I love her, so I buy them. I can picture her right now, the crayon in her fist, biting on her tongue, and laying on the floor on her stomach and coloring.

Sometimes my aunt finds her, sleeping, in the middle of her crayons and her coloring books, and she covers my mom with the afghan from the couch and puts her Wall-E doll I made her under her arm.

So tomorrow, I'll double up on my medication, and go on a hunt for Wall-E stuff.

Wish me luck.

This hits very, very, very close to home.

My sister is about the same age as your mom. She had a stroke this fall. She can walk & talk, but her fine motor control in her hands is poor. At first you might not know what's wrong, except that she kind of gets...lost...when talking.

So when we talk, I try to ask her things, to make her mind function again. Bear in mind this is a woman who spoke 5 languages, whose IQ is in the range of cooking meat, who studies volcanoes & the like while running a small business.

If your Mother can handle fine coloring, get her the Dover coloring books. They're packed with all kinds of facts & goodies, which may help your Mom recover. They have everything from ancient civilizations to movie stars, so there's a good chance she'll like something.

Wall-E stuff is everwhere so you should be able to find her things she'll enjoy. And right now toys tend to be on sale. Ever since Star Wars no one's really looked askance at adults who love things from movies, so no one will denigrate her for loving Wall-E.
